06.08.2013 Berry and Fruit Festival “Karagat Fest” Starts in Issyk-Kul Region

A first-ever Berry and Fruit Festival “Karagat Fest” will be held in the village of Bokonbayevo, Issyk-Kul province, on August 10, 2013. The AVEP Public Fund, which has organized the event with the financial support of Kumtor Operating Company, is promising to arrange a genuine holiday devoted to renowned natural products of Issyk-Kul. As part of the Festival, a grandiose fair is supposed to be organized to enable the visitors to treat themselves to locally produced goods and take part in master classes on jam and juice production as well as take various quizes with prizes and gifts. The purpose of the Festival is to promote berry and fruit production in the region and increase the tourist potential of the southern coast of Issyk-Kul Lake. Therefore, the organizers are planning to make the Festival an annual event, a forum for farmers, processors and consumers to foster partnerships. 22.07.2013 Kumtor provides 10 scholarships for students to attend the New Generation Academy

Ten students from disadvantaged families have been given the opportunity to study at the New Generation Academy (NGA) at the American University of Central Asia (AUCA), thanks to new scholarships provided by Kumtor. The scholarships for the future university students cover not only tuition, but also include room and board. The NGA program is a year-long course that provides over 600 academic hours of intense English, Kyrgyz, Russian, History, IT, and Science. The curriculum was designed with the help of AUCA partner Bard College, and includes laboratory work, progressive testing, seminars, excursions, and other extracurricular activities. “The New Generation Academy is an innovative initiative of AUCA, and unlike any other program currently offered in Central Asia. 18.07.2013 The Youth Forum was held in Ton district

Last Tuesday around 200 young people of Ton district attended the Friendship of Youth Forum, which took place in the District Administration with the financial support of Kumtor. Activists of the nine aiyl districts discussed the current problems and decided to join their efforts for the resolution of these issues. In the near future representatives of each village will choose their own leaders who will coordinate the efforts of young people to develop Ton. The youngest akim of the province, the Head of Ton district Bakyt Ryspaev, also took part in the Forum. International organizations and NGOs informed the participants about the projects implemented in the region, in which the young people could be involved, and thereby make a contribution to the development of their villages. Participants of the Forum were introduced to the possibilities for the district’s development under the current projects, such as the YouthBank Project where they can implement social projects, as well as the work of Karagat + and other scheduled events.

16.07.2013 Joint Project of Kumtor and Kyrgyz Agro-Input Enterprise Development Project is successfully implemented in Jeti-Oguz district of Issyk-Kul province

Two sites with a total acreage of 2,000 hectares will be brought back into the agricultural production in Ak-Dobo and Lipenka rural councils. The main goal of the project is to prevent degradation of agricultural land by restoring soil fertility and rehabilitating irrigation systems
