A greenhouse was officially opened on October 29, 2015, in the Balajan kindergarten located in the city of Balykchi, Issyk-Kul province. The green house project was supported by Kumtor company as part of the Karagat + Program being implemented by the AVEP Public Fund.

Participating in the ceremony were Balykchi Mayor Satybek Shamshudinov, chairman of the Balykchi Kenesh Daniyar Bekbashov, Kenesh members, head of the city education department, representatives of Kumtor Gold Company and AVEP Public Fund. The 115 square meter greenhouse project’s expenses totaled 569,589 soms.

“We are marking today an excellent event in our city, this being the opening of a greenhouse. It’s good news for our city. I don’t believe the general aim has been attained by merely building the greenhouse as hard work is required now to bring the greenhouse project to fruition and see it work for the benefit of the people,” said Balykchi Mayor Satybek Shamshudinov.

“It’s a great achievement for our community as there are 130 children being educated in this kindergarten. Hopefully, our children will be well provided with fresh vegetables in the winter and be healthy. Healthy children mean a healthy nation,” said Kenjegul Idrisova, the Balajan kindergarten’s director.

“Under the Karagat + Program, work is underway as regards greenhouse construction across Issyk-Kul province with a view to the provision of the public with safe foodstuffs. Eleven greenhouses were built in kindergartens, orphanages and schools as part of this program,” said Nurlan Tokonov, the AVEP Public Fund’s Director.

KARAGAT+ is a joint three-year project of Kumtor Company and AVEP Public Fund. Its purpose is to encourage local communities and expand the potential of the berry-and-fruit market. It is being implemented in Issyk-Kul province with an emphasis made on the southern coast of Issyk-Kul Lake. Under this environmentally oriented project, the Public Fund will train farmers in the methods of growing high-yielding cold- and disease-resistant currants as well as innovative irrigation methods. AVEP experts will assist in creating a network of nursery gardens, greenhouses and farming goods reception centers. More information is available here.
